the English translation is" "The trip to Panama" by Janosch. I am currently trying to purchase the English version to see if it does it justice. Janosch is one of the best-known German artists and children's book authors. The tiger-duck is an absolute cult in Germany for Generations .
The stories and the writing is fresh and endearing. The little tiger and the little bear find a banana crate and decide to travel to the place the bananas came from.
In the middle of the cute illustrations you see a little bunny standing up and peeing against a bush. How more endearing can it get?

After 10 years in Germany I have finally taken the time to read this classic of German children's literature. I've always loved the illustrations which you see everywhere. The story is that of a journey, colored by dream and hope, as the bear and the tiger travel to their dreamland, Panama, the country that smells of bananas from top to bottom. It tells about how discovering new things and meeting new people can change the way you embrace your daily life. A must read, up there with Dr Seuss' "Oh the places you'll go" or Sendak's "Where the wild things are".

Het gras is altijd groener aan de andere kant van de heuvel. Kleine Tijger en kleine Beer gaan op zoek naar Panama waar het leven mooier is, omdat alles van onder tot boven naar bananen ruikt. Maar na een grote reis blijkt dat het paradijs dichterbij ligt dan verwacht – het mooiste plekje is toch thuis.
In de reeks Lemniscaat Kroonjuwelen verzamelt Lemniscaat de mooiste, rijkste kinderboeken van de hedendaagse jeugd, hun ouders en hun grootouders. Alle boeken in de reeks zijn uitgevoerd met een karakteristiek linnen ruggetje en een Lemniscaat met een kroontje als logo.

Probably one of my favourite German children's books out there, or really, any book for that matter. The illustrations are beautiful and the story itself and the moral it conveys is just outstanding.

Als vor dem Haus des kleinen Bären und des kleinen Tigers eine Kiste mit der Aufschrift "Panama" angespült wird, die auch noch herrlich nach Bananen duftet, machen sich die beiden Freunde auf den Weg, um dieses wunderbare Land zu finden, denn dort wo Bananen wachsen, muss es auf jeden Fall besser sein als zu Hause. Auf ihrer Reise machen sie viele neue Bekanntschaften und erleben so manches Abenteuer, bis sie schließlich erkennen, wo es wirklich am schönsten ist.
Was habe ich das Buch als Kind geliebt!
Diese Audioausgabe versetzt den Hörer zurück in die eigene Kindheit, zu der abenteuerlichen Reise des kleinen Bären und des kleinen Tigers, wundervoll gesprochen von Dietmar Bär und Til Schweiger. Einzig die schönen Bilder Janoschs fehlen (begreiflicherweise), aber die tauchen nach und nach beim Hören wieder vor dem inneren Auge auf, sodass das Vergnügen dann wieder komplett ist.

Kaip pinakolada yra susijusi su vaikiška knygele, paklausite jūs. O aš atsakysiu, kad man galvoje ėmė ir susisiejo. Knygelės pirma istorija "Panama labai graži" ir daina "Escape" (kurią matyt daugelis žinom kaip Pinakolados dainą 😀) man skambėjo kaip visiškai tos pačios temos istorijos! Nepasitenkinti dabartimi, ilgėtis ir ieškoti geresnės vietos, patirti nuotykių, galų gale grįžti ten, kur buvai (gal kiek pačiam pasikeitisiam, ar pasikeitus požiūrio taškui, kiek atsitraukus) ir pamatyti, kad geriausia visad ir buvo ten, kur buvai, kur namai, kur sava. Reikėjo tik priminimo. Labai gražu, labai nostalgiška, labai tikra. 💛💛
Daugeliui "Panama labai graži" kelia vaikystės prisiminimus ir dūsavimus, o aš nebuvau skaičius. Taisiau padėtį skaitydama vaikams garsiai vakarais. Ir, žinokit, man žiūrint naujomis akimis, ne tomis nostalgiškomis ji buvo graži, bet ne kažkas absoliučiai nuostabaus. Labai, tiesiog labai erzino visur vietoj maisto gaminimo vartotas "taisyti". Kažkaip nepriprantu, kad žmonės taip ir vartoja, bet jau literatūroj atrodė virš visko. 😀 Ir dar keliose vietose kliuvo tiesiog netaisyklingai vartojami žodžiai. 🤷♀️ Skaitydama vaikams taisiau knygą balsu. 😅
Gerai, gerai, be to ji tikrai miela. Net liūdna, kad man to vaikystės nostalgijos krūvio neturi, gal dėl to čia putojuos. 😅 Bet mano vaikams tą krūvi jau, panašu, turės. 💛

Tiger a medevdík išli zlým smerom do Panamy a vrátili sa tam odkiaľ prišli. A bolo to veeeelmi smiešne, pretože nevedeli, že je to ich dom.

I read this in Estonian, so I’ll leave aside for now all the issues I had with confusing sentence structure and complex grammar etc., as I can’t tell how much of this was to do with poor translation, vs. being just as odd in the original, but, instead, purely at a narrative level …. Huh!?
The English blurb here describes it as "A touching story about learning to appreciate what you have.” Except, er, it’s not. Or, at least, not unless our erstwhile heroes are to be written off, instead, as an object lesson in how not to do it. By the end of the book they still haven’t even realised that they’re back where they started, and our omniscient narrator seems to extol the pinnacle of their new existence as being a new couch — which fits neither a “the grass only seems greener” narrative, nor a “sometimes the grass really is greener” one. Rather the moral seems to be “You should chase your dreams, because even though you won’t end up where you want to be, your old life will disintegrate in the meantime, and then you can buy some cool new stuff to make it better than before.” Which probably isn’t the worst message I’ve read in a children’s book this year, but it’s hard for me to understand what makes this such a classic...

May 26, 2020Wanneer ik boeken herlees die ik me herinner van vroeger als kind, hoop ik altijd te voelen hoe ik denk dat ik me toen voelde. Meestal is dat gevoel er niet meer. Daarom vind ik het lastig hier een mening over te geven. Beoordeel ik het boek vanuit het nu, vanuit mij? Of meer 'objectief' vanuit wat ik denk dat een kind leuk zou vinden? Dat is een beetje een dilemma - maar niet het allerverschrikkelijjste ooit. Natuurlijk.
'Objectief' gezien is 'O, wat mooi is Panama!' een boek met mooie illustraties en een grappig/teder verhaal. Subjectief gezien blijf ik bij die mening maar mis ik iets diepers wat me bijblijft. Al doen de illustraties dat wel: Het beeld van de kleine tijger met zijn rode pan als rugzak en zijn tijgereend op wieltjes, al lopend door de velden, zie ik zo voor me :)
Het is in ieder geval een makkelijk en leuk boek om te lezen in een taal die je bent begonnen te leren!

Nur wer sein zu Hause verlässt, findet heraus wie wunderbar es dort ist. Jeder Erwachsene hat das im Urlaub schon erlebt, wenn man nach Hause kommt und alles plötzlich so toll ist. Diese Erfahrung machen der kleine Bär und der kleine Tiger ebenso. Begleitet von ihrer Tigerente machen sie sich auf nach Panama, nur um am Ende wieder zu Hause anzukommen.

Una historia muy tierna del autor alemán Janosch. Que habla del país de Panamá como un destino maravilloso y genial. Me ha encantado la forma como estos personajes tan tiernos y memorables conversan, analizas y enfrentan situaciones de forma inocente y divertida. Panama es planteado como el país de sus sueños que huele a bananas. La verdad que es una linda historia y me hace entender porque los alemanes les gusta visitar a mi país.

A sweet little story about a Tiger and a bear trying to find their way to something better, but having fun and remaining wonderfully optimistic along the way. The illustrations are as much a part of the story as the text (which often refers to the illustrations), and feature, if you pay attention offbeat details. A book I will love to read to my kids someday.

Milá knižka pre menšie deti o tom ako sa macko a tigrík vybrali do Panamy, lebo v nej určite rozvoniavajú banány. A či tam prišli a koho cestou našli :-)
Pekné ilustrácie, text tak akurát pre štvorročnú Elianku, ale bola by fajn aj pre prváčika na prvé čítanie, sú tam dosť veľké písmená.

I still remember this being one of my favourite books when I was little and just in kindergarten. My mom read this to me a lot and when I finally could read it by myself, I kind of did all the time. Beautiful story, as everything by Janosch.
