The Epic Of Gilgamesh – 1

The First King Gılgamış (in Turkish real name)
THE FIRST KING IN HISTORY, HERO GILGAMES

Gilgames sat in the part of the palace overlooking the Euphrates River, watching the calm flowing waters of the river, the boats and sailboats sailing on the water, and he was thinking from one side. Black hair down to his shoulders, a dirty beard and the face adorned by his mustache. The muscles of his arms and legs, which were exposed from his leather suit, looked very handsome on the one hand and very strong on the other, with his long length and large body. Since they found him so superior and different from themselves, they thought he had a Divinity and believed that two-thirds of his body was God and one-third of his body was human. So they said that his mother was Ninsun the Goddess and his father was the King Lu-galbanda before him.
Gilgames was the king of the city of Uruk. There was also a strange story about his becoming king. His so-called father was Emmerkar, who was the King of Uruk the two before him. One day, a fortune teller told the King that his daughter would have a son, and when he grew up, he would take away the kingdom by killing the queen, his grandfather. Thereupon, the King closed his daughter in a tower so that she would not be with anyone.
To prevent him from coming out, he put a guard next to him. Despite this much prevention, the girl is pregnant again. Nine months later the girl had a son. Seeing the guard boy, the King threw the boy down from the tower in fear that he would kill him. An eagle was flying under the tower at that time. Seeing the boy falling, the eagle immediately took him on his back and dropped it with great care on the edge of a palm garden; Your gardener saw him while leaving him. When she approached her to understand what happened, she met a beautiful baby. He immediately took him to his house. Together with his wife they named him “Gilgames”, which means the same, so that he “sees and knows everything”. When the boy grew up and reached the age of puberty, he left the gardener. Before saying the creek hill is flat, the city started to wander from city to city. Meanwhile, he learned to write and read.He acquired a lot of information in accordance with his name. He gave wisdom to those who ask wisdom and guided those who ask the way. While traveling like this, one day his road brought him to Uruk. Uruk is a big city. While admiring the streets, those who saw him realized that he was a stranger, “where will he go?” he stuck behind him. Finally they came to the city’s great Market Square.
Then, people started to gather around him. Gilgames stood like a statue, looking at those who came, and those who came to him. The elders of the city began to talk among them, “Our king is dead. He does not have a son. This young man looks like he will be king to us with both his big body and his good looks. Come on, let’s make this our king.” Everyone shared this word with each other. Everybody who heard it confirmed this. Thereupon, the elders went and told him that they wanted to make him king.
Would Gilgames turn down such a request he could never have thought of? He accepted immediately. Thereupon, they took him to the palace, clothed him, enveloped him and placed him on the throne of the kingdom.
That is how he became the King of Uruk. Uruk was one of the first cities of the Sumerian country to exist after the Flood. From that time to Gilgames, four kings ruled Uruk.
Uruk also had a chief god and guardian God: An God of Heaven. Each city had a chieftain in Sumer. However, Uruk had a privilege. He, too, bless the Sumerian country and
It was the fact that the beautiful Goddess Inanna and her husband the Shepherd God Dumuzi lived here that brought abundance, love, love, peace and war. Uruk was Sumer’s largest animal breeding and gathering center due to the presence of the Shepherd’s God. That is why Uruk was also called “agillar city”. The people of this place were also very hard working. After all, wasn’t the greatest characteristic of their ancestors was their diligence?

As soon as they came to these lands, they took the overflowing waters of the rivers Firat and Tigris into the canals, irrigated the dry land, drained the swamps, made vineyards and gardens.
they knew how to grow all kinds of products. Weren’t the Horizons today their descendants?
They were developing their civilization by adding new discoveries to what they learned from their ancestors. The products in the warehouses and the animals in the kegs were always full. On the looms, the most beautiful fabrics were woven from the wool of animals and plants. The fame of the dresses made from these fabrics and leather treated in leather workshops spread to all neighboring nations.
These countries almost competed to buy these produced goods. Uruk merchants take the goods they produce with their cars, boats, donkey caravans there; However, stone, wood, gold, silver, precious goods and
they were taking the stones.
He was rich, Uruk was very rich, and Gilgames was very happy. It was the scholars of this city who started the first article; The first car wheel, which opened schools and taught how to read and write, and immortalized information on clay, was created here, the first plow was made here, the first ox to the plow was run here.
But they say the friend sleeps, the enemy does not sleep! The primitive peoples around them envied this wealth, this magnificence.
They were so primitive that they did not even know how to build houses or bury their dead, and they were eating raw meat. These ignorant, inexperienced people, from time to time, attacked Uruk in droves, ravaged it, spilled blood, stole whatever was in their hands and fled.
As soon as Gilgames became king, he thought of his enemies to protect the city and planned to build thick walls around the city.
Now the wall he had built was before him in all its glory. The city had surrounded it all around. Thick doors made of copper-covered wood were placed on various parts of the wall to get in and out of the city. No enemy could easily enter this city anymore. Even those who wanted to enter the city as foreigners were kept at the gates for days, sometimes months, until their identities were determined.

This wall was not easy to build. The men of the whole city had worked day and night, could not go to their homes, the children were upset because they could not see their fathers, and the women were crying and mourning; But no matter what, the wall should have finished soon.
Gilgames did not look at anyone’s tears, listened to fatigue, and made people work without sitting down.
Was it bad? Finally, this wall, which was wide enough to even drive on, was exposed with its towers and doors. Now everyone would be able to sleep comfortably in their bed, without fear of attacking the enemy. The view of the wall from the palace was also magnificent! Gilgames said to himself with great pride, “The outside of the wall shines brightly as if covered in copper.
“Those who walked up on the wall would be surprised that it was made of baked brick.”
Was it easy to make that baked brick! Piles and cane were used to cook the mulch, and wood with piles purchased from other countries was used.
“Those who see the wall will not believe that it was built today. They will think that its foundation was laid by the seven sages *.
According to the belief of the Sumerians. Before the Flood, seven wise men came out of the sea, dispersed into the cities and taught people about civilization there. The hero Tutan saved them by taking them on his ship and they taught civilization to the cities again.
However, I made it. I’m King Gilgames. Fortunately, on his baseline, I had this wall inscribed on the precious blue stone with an inscription that I did it, and put it in a copper box locked with a bronze lock. Everyone should know that I had this done. No king can build such a wall! Is she alone that I have made? Did I not make the Eanna Temple of our dear God Inanna built? He said how magnificent it looks from here.
The green fields and gardens outside the city wall stretched out as far as the eye could see, and the gardens of temples and parks adorned the interior of the city.
Among such beauties, Gilgames somehow did not want to be content with what he had done. He was constantly tiring his mind so that he could do more useful things for his people.
He kept thinking, “I will die like everyone else anyway. I must do a job that will make them happy, delighted, and at the same time not forget my name, against the work of my people in these structures before my end comes.”
That day, Gilgames suddenly thought of what he was going to do. Yes, why hadn’t he thought of that before. He came face to face with him as soon as he ran out to call his beloved friend Enkidu. When Enkidu came to the door of the hall to enter Gilgames’ side, he saw that Gilgames was in rapturous thoughts, watching him at the door so as not to separate him from those thoughts. With Gilgames leaving his place, he too
he had plunged in.
When Gilgames said, “My dear friend, I have found what to do, my answer to the question that has made me think of how long is now, yes I have found it now,” Enkidu said in great astonishment, “What is he, quickly explain to me!” he asked curiously:
Gilgames said, “You know, people are dying all the time. Our gods have written on our brick when we will die. Before this time comes, I want to do something beneficial to my country and our people. And so I will ensure that my name will not be forgotten after I die.”
Enkidu said, “What are you saying ?! Have you not made the great wall to protect our city, the destroyed temples of our Gods? You have not settle with them either, our pupil, our great God Enlil in our beautiful city of Nippur, and his wife, the goddess Ninlil, which is about to be destroyed!” said.
Gilgames said, “But not me, our people did them. How upset and bored they were for this, you don’t know!”
Enkidu said, “What shall we say to Agga, the king of the KIS city you brought to his knees ?!”
When Gilgames heard the name of Agga, he smiled and his adventure with him came before his eyes.
The king said to him, “Uruk will come under my rule!” he had sent the word. Look! Was it easy for a king like Gilgames and his city to be taken over? Nevertheless, Gilgames did not immediately gather his troops against him and went to war; he had to find out what his people would say to this and find it right to act accordingly. For this, he gathered the council of elders of the city and told them, “The Winter Queen Agga wants to take over our city. What do you say, should we not fight and give our freedom, or do we obey and go under its rule?” asked. Gilgames was struck by their response: “Oh,” they said, “let’s fight and die, let’s go under his rule!” “How strange,” Gilgames said to this unexpected answer, “the older people are more afraid of death”. Gilgames,he had posed the same question to the youth council. They never thought, “Even if we die, I am safe to fight. I will not let anyone lose our freedom.” Fortunately, before a war was fought, King Agga, fearing Gilgames’ great reaction, had broken his word and ceased to covet Uruk’s rule. As Gilgames broke into thinking about this, Enkidu said, “You still haven’t told what you want to do?” and immediately replied: “To kill Humbaba, the monster (Huwawa) waiting for the cedar forests!” Enkidu baffled looking at Gilgames. “You know the dragon in a place called the land of immortality?” said. Gilgames said, “Well you know, he is the monster to be killed! You know, our country has no forest. Our people are trying to bring the necessary tree, timber from there.but our people cannot enter the forest easily because of the dragon. If we go and kill that monster. Timber is easily brought to our country.
Our buildings, furniture, boats can be built in abundance. Also, such an event adds a name to my name, a yellow to my assumption. This heroism is not easily forgotten, “he said.
Enkidu, still unable to shake off the stinging, said, “Well, but you know, that monster was so terrible that when it roared, the sky groaned, fire sprang out of its mouth instead of breath. Its teeth were dragon teeth, its face was like a lion’s face. Its attack was like a storm of deluge. how can you cope? ” said.

Gilgames said, “But if we get together, join hands, we can defeat whatever comes our way.”
Enkidu said, “If you die while you are struggling with him, who knows how much your mother will shed, what screams, don’t you think about her?”
Gilgames said, “Don’t worry my friend! I will not die, and my mother will not be sorry for me! As long as you come with me and help me!”
Enkidu said, “If I know I will die, I will never leave you alone, where is our friendship!” said.
Gilgames was very touched by Enkidu’s response. Friendship was that not it? But until he found Enkidu, he had no one to be with him like that. It was full of people, but he could not find a friend of his strength and mind. He had an entire country, a magnificent city, a working people, but he was all alone and this loneliness made him very unhappy. One day, in this unhappiness, she thought of the drum and tamper that Goddess Inanna gave her as a gift. He deserved them. The beautiful Goddess, very sadly, came to her one day and asked her to cut down the huluppu tree in her garden.
Gilgames rushed into his garden at once. He couldn’t believe what he saw. At the root of the tree a huge snake like a dragon entered and settled, on its trunk the genie named Lilit was set up, and Anzu made the birdhouse at the top. They all prevented the Goddess from cutting the tree.

However, Goddess had seen that tree drifting in the Firat River and had caught it and planted it in its garden. His aim was to cut the tree after it grew and make it build a throne, a dais, and a bed.
Gilgames, fearlessly approached the tree and hit such a blow that those who had built a nest did not know where to flee, and left. Gilgames had cut it off and gave it to the Goddess.
As the goddess made her do what she wanted, the leftover one had a drum and a mallet to be given to Gilgames.

How long have they been standing aside. Gilgames immediately took both of them and ran down the street and started hitting the drum with all his might. “What’s going on?” he had burst into the street.
He liked this disgrace of the people: “I am not the king, I will do whatever I want. Nobody can interfere with me,” and they continued to play the drums day and night, and the people were so uncomfortable that they said, “Our King should have a friend according to his own strength and heart. He was talking to him on the one hand and praying to the Gods for it. Finally, the God of Sky, An, listened to their pleadings, and the great Goddess Aruru said, “Now how you created Gilgames, create someone who is equal to him in body and heart!” said. The goddess had washed her hands, took an earthen clay from the river’s edge, giving her the shape of a man, letting her into the dirt.
