Tips
  • 600 meters northwest of Wohlde are located, mostly in a small forest, 45 burial mounds from the Early Bronze Age. It is the most important burial mound cemetery in the district of Celle. This cemetery belonged to the so-called Lüneburg culture (1500-1200 BC). Originally there were much more graves to the east, but in the course of time they had to give way to agriculture. Only predominantly the hills lying in the forest remained untouched until today. The dead were buried here in hollowed oak trunks. At their heads stones with burn marks were found. It is believed that they are stones of their domestic hearth. The oak coffins were covered with earth, which was secured by annular stone walls against slipping. The manifold grave goods of jewelry and weapons indicate that the population at that time must have been prosperous.
