Executive coaching is a powerful relationship between a coach and client that is based in a dialogue focused on the objective of the client. The executive coach holds the space and typically asks many questions that helps the client to reveal their business challenge, objective and ultimately to identify options and often solutions. Executive coaches will both support and challenge the client and as a fundamental premise believe that the client is capable and resourceful. This allows the client to explore options and find solutions typically to a variety of human relationship related challenges. The coach is not your mentor, manager or friend in this role and should be someone who is trained and certified in this profession.

I disagree with needing to have a coach that isn’t your manager and this may be because I’ve only ever worked in an organisation that is built super flat. A manager has the insights required to build the individuals in their respective team. They have access to performance data and behaviours that can help shape coaching conversation on performance improvement of career growth. Having a leader coach you rather than an executive, would be more effective because the coaching is being facilitated by the leader that will shape the growth of the employee without needing another individual to be a bridge. This is of course in my opinion and I’d be happy to learn from another perspective.
