So when will this all end …………
Horizon Europe sharing research with
United States - Research and innovation - European Union
The EU and the US share research values of openness, transparency, fairness, inclusiveness, academic freedom and ethics, and are natural partners in science
The US has had the highest level of participation in EU research and innovation programmes of all non-EU and non-Associated countries for many years and US researchers and innovators are welcome to team up with European counterparts in Horizon Europe.
In global terms, any new UK programme will be small relative to others, which reduces the UK’s ability to set the regulatory and research agenda. As a comparison, the US National Institute of Health (NIH) spends the equivalent of over £30 billion annually on research. The UK Medical Research Council and National Institute for Health Research combined spend under £2 billion.
Associating to Horizon Europe does not mean that the UK will have less scope for forging new links outside Europe. Horizon Europe is expected to become highly international itself, with countries such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA expressing an interest in participating.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is ditching animal testing. The agency intends to cut back 30 percent on requests and spending on animal tests by 2025. It hopes that all requests and funding will be eliminated by 2035.
But the Government of the Netherlands is by far world leading in their quest to end animal testing.
The previous Dutch cabinet, expressed the ambition to make the Netherlands ‘largely free of animal testing’ by 2025, and to become an international leader, just as it had been in 1997 with the ban on animal testing for cosmetic products.
The Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality is fully committed, together with the partners of the Transition Programme for Innovation without the use of animals (TPI), to the Netherlands as a forerunner in the international transition with animal-free innovation’.
So UK Parliament, the balls in your court, if you want to be world leading you know what to do !!!

Australia can and should do more to advance food security in the Indo-Pacific region.
With ubiquitous food price inflation and growing inequality of food access, governments are seeing food insecurity as a trigger for discontent and political instability. Climate change poses further threats to geopolitical stability and regional prosperity. But there are solutions. For decades, Australia has been a valued source of agricultural innovation. Productivity improvements have been realized in hostile physical environments characterized by variable and extreme weather conditions. Public investment through CSIRO, state agriculture departments, and universities – coupled with a vibrant agri-business sector – has contributed to Australia’s food export competitiveness.
Internationally, Australia’s agricultural research community has established an envied reputation through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). Established in 1982, ACIAR has played a unique role in establishing and financing research partnerships between Australian institutions and national agricultural research organizations, mainly in the Indo-Pacific region.

My sincere thanks to Advance for providing me the opportunity to share these thoughts at its 2024 Annual Gala Dinner in Sydney (below). Together, we celebrated the achievements of Australians living and working overseas, international alumni of Aussie universities, and recent migrants to Australia who are innovating in their fields.

It was a pleasure to discuss some key (and sometimes controversial) aspects of the #EUGreenDeal. A few things to always have in the back of our minds when thinking about this:
👉 The effects of #climatechange are already there, and so are its human and economic costs. And those will keep growing, so the later we act, the more painful and expensive it will be. And let’s not forget: the most vulnerable will suffer most, and first;
👉 The #EUGreenDeal is Europe’s growth strategy – a huge global market is developing to make #netzero a reality, and Europe & its industry must be a part of this;
👉 Some sectors of the economy will be affected more than others, and there are significant EU funds and initiatives available to help with this transition;
