Really pleased to see the press coverage of Alexandra Lamarche’s most recent Refugees International’s report on the intersection of climate change, conflict, and forced displacement in the Lake Chad Basin region. The report drops before next week’s Third High-Level Conference on Lake Chad Basin Region. Donors, aid agencies, and regional governments should seize this opportunity to get serious about the threat climate change poses to regional stability and its implications for forced displacement. https://lnkd.in/eBeFPSJG

This is an excellent article by Damian Lilly that should be read by anyone who - like me - believes we need to deliberately integrate climate action into our humanitarian work, but is worried this will just add to the massive mission creep of humanitarian action if it doesn’t involve prioritization and clear-eyed choices (which isn’t the forté of the humanitarian ‘system’). If you read it in conjunction with Hugo Slim ‘s recent paper on ‘Painful Choices: How humanitarians can prioritize in a world of rising need’ (available on Reliefweb) then you’re in a much better position to address some of these hard questions than you were before reading these two articles.
Climate change is now a present danger to humanity and no longer a future threat. It is clear that the climate crisis is a humanitarian crisis – yet there is still a distinct lack of clarity about what the precise role of humanitarian aid should be to address it. #climatecrisis 👉 The climate crisis is exacerbating the causes of displacement and flight. 👉 Man-made climate change is the most drastic crisis of our time, and the displacement of people one of the most devastating consequences, stresses UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe . 👉 Conflict and human rights abuses remain the main reasons for flight and displacement and may be further exacerbated by climate change. 👉 Refugees, internally displaced persons and stateless people also face the climate crisis virtually unprotected. They often live in regions that lack the resources to mitigate the impacts of climate change. 👉 The severe weather disaster in Libya is further evidence of this, leaving countless dead and people now in urgent need of emergency aid. 🔊 https://lnkd.in/d8y6ztUv

The latest edition of the Humanitarian Exchange (by the Humanitarian Practice Network) examines the interplay between climate change, conflict, and displacement in crisis settings. It highlights how these factors, while varying in impact, often converge, complicating crises and exacerbating conditions for affected communities. The issue underlines the complexity of contemporary crises, stressing the need for nuanced understanding and solutions. #EastAfrica #NileBasin #ClimateChange #Conflict #Displacement https://lnkd.in/dU_tHhmx)

This article has some good insights as the debate rages on climate resilience. #climatechange #climateresilience #humanitarian “The role of humanitarian aid must be the last rung in the ladder: helping to minimise the impacts of—and pick up the pieces of—those disasters that can’t be avoided.”

The compound impact of #ClimateChang and #Conflict on the people of #Yemen is devastating. This long-forgotten war has left 17 million people food insecure, according to WFP. "The economic fragility and scarcity of food have had a devastating toll, accounting for an astounding 60% of the total number of casualties, which had reached 377,000 by the end of 2021. If the war persists, it is anticipated that the percentage of individuals, especially children, who will die due to indirect causes linked to the conflict will rise to 70% of total casualties by 2030." 🛑 Please save the life of a child or a pregnant woman who is suffering from malnutrition by donating to the World Food Programme. Tomorrow (25 January) the #UNSC will have an open briefing and closed consultations on #Haiti. Haiti is one of the most vulnerable countries in LAC to climate change and is also in the midst of a deep security, political, economic and humanitarian crisis, with almost half of Haitians needing humanitarian assistance. Without properly addressing climate and environmental challenges, the violence, exclusion, and poverty that confront so many Haitians are also doomed to spiral further and become entrenched in daily life. The #RootsforPeace study identifies 5 main climate security pathways for Haiti and proposes innovative responses to tackle them by integrating climate change adaptation and environmental protection with peacebuilding measures to help address Haiti’s #climatesecurity challenges. 🔎adelph.it/WRHaiti
