Kick-off for a new polar research project that will investigate warming in the Arctic during the dark season: life cycles, foraging and overwintering. On 6-8 February 2024 researchers from seven universities and research institutions met at the @Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven. YESSS – Year-round EcoSystem Study on Svalbard – is coordinated by the AWI and funded by the German @Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 2,7 million Euros by the end of 2026. Outreach to media and a broad public is a special focus of the project, particularly to engage a young audience on why polar research matters. The first paper of my PhD project is now published in Regional Studies in Marine Science, and is available through ScienceDirect. In the study we have derived, validated and analysed the wave climate variability from 1959 to 2021 along the south coast of Sweden. We identified a correlation between the magnitude and direction of incoming annual wave energy and the North Atlantic Oscillation index (NAO). This has implications for the littoral processes that govern the morphological evolution of the coastline.
