In today’s knowledge economy, be a leader, not a boss.
“Remember the difference between a boss and a leader; a boss says “Go!”- a leader says “Let’s go!” – E.M. Kelly
In today’s competitive world, being a leader rather than a boss can boost a team’s performance and guarantee success for the organization.
A great leader is never just a person who instructs and uses the power provided by the position.
He or she will guide and support the employee to reach the required end objective.
A leader will tell, and more importantly, show the direction and be a part of the journey to get to the destination.
While the focus is still on getting the required jobs done, the emphasis with a leader is not solely in the result but also on the process.
A leader must show what the job ahead is and be of guidance during the tasks.
In a way, a leader’s role is more motivational rather than supervisory.
With the guidance and support, a leader becomes the foundation of keeping the subordinates motivated to follow the path.
So if you want to be a leader, then you need to -
1) Coach employees rather than push them
2) Generate enthusiasm rather than fear
3) Say “we” rather than “I”
4) Help solve the issue rather than blame the employee
5) Show how things are done, rather than asking others to do
6) Develops employees rather than abuse them.
7) Gives Credit rather than taking Credit
8) Ask the team rather than commanding the team
9) Creates Value rather than counting numbers
10) Trusts rather than controls
11) Creates more leaders rather than safeguarding own position
12) Look at “higher success” than “results”
13) Listen more
14) For new projects, take initiative rather than being a bystander
15) Are People oriented rather than result oriented
16) Focus on Vision rather than maintaining the status quo
17) Communicate (2 way) with the team
18) Collaborate and takes feedback
19) Delegate authority but takes responsibility
20) Command respect as against demand respect.
Each business has a boss. But, very few have a leader.
These differences are apparent in which one will affect what you can do and how you achieve it.
If you are in charge or want to be, you must decide if you will be the boss or the leader.
Remember
A leader exudes positive character traits.
Also, a leader acts for the benefit of others.
By putting team members first, a leader ensures that team members will be productive. After all, you can't be a leader without followers.
So you want to be a Boss or leader?
