Mass Timber Structural Engineer | I help solve design, cost and construction challenges with mass timber

2024 IBC and Tall Mass Timber ➡ What are the Big Changes? 🤔 Now that we're officially into the year 2024, the current version of the International Building Code, published by the International Code Council, is the 2024 version which can be viewed for free here: https://lnkd.in/dfRDGBkW There are 3 very big changes in the 2024 IBC specific to tall mass timber projects: 1️⃣ The amount of timber ceilings in Type IV-B (up to 12 stories) which can be exposed has increased from 20% allowed to 100% allowed 2️⃣ The requirement to separate portions of exposed timber ceilings and walls by 15 ft horizontally has been removed (the separation requirement still exists for portions of walls and walls) 3️⃣ The requirement to place a 1" noncombustible floor topping sequentially with timber erection has been removed (the noncombustible topping still needs to be there, but it can be installed later in the construction process) (this is a change in the 2024 IFC not the IBC) Several states/jurisdictions have already adopted these new code provisions, and others will throughout the year. Check out how your state currently ranks here: https://lnkd.in/gQdbaX8Z If you're interested in learning more about these changes, how they impact the design of tall mass timber projects, and what it means for costs and the future of tall wood, check out this video: https://lnkd.in/dJS2x8qa And check out this WoodWorks article, which links to the code reason statements and reports from the full scale fire tests conducted at RISE: https://lnkd.in/e2UTRhvd #masstimber #structuralengineering #architecture #highrise #construction
