Pūriri (or Kauere) is easily one of my favorite New Zealand trees, truly a Rakau Rangatira. A long lived tree with extremely durable timber. This quality made it very suitable for fence posts as can be seen in the picture, a forgotten pile of Pūriri fenceposts. The stump and crown can clearly be seen on either side of the posts. One wonders how long ago the tree was felled and rived into suitable lenghts, undoubtedly a laborious task. Seems such a waste after all this time...
