I was asked by Swiss newspaper Blick to comment on gender stereotypes in games. Here's what came out (In German). In short, I am cautiously optimistic, considering that we see broader queer and female representation in games today – somthing that was entirely absent only a decade ago. On the other hand, especially AAA games still lag behind mainstream media like movies and series when it comes to representation, and continue to serve a reactionary gamer crowd that gets riled up at the pure mention of the word "gender".
I have dealt with experiences of discrimination in gaming culture from a cultural studies perspective. The topic of nostalgia came up again and again. This could be one of the reasons why big developers still tend to stick to the same old mould when it comes to AAA titles.
I guess these stereotypes should not be called "representations" but "fantasies". That way we can start to think about the fanatsies and needs for certain roles. To me, these gender stereotypes in games point towards our reality that never was and today is, less than a ever, congruent with "fantasitic" gender roles.
die frage wäre ja auch, warum frauen - auch im realen - immer längere haare haben. aber das führt in gefährliche abgründe des reaktionären.

4moThere are a) no studies that prove this for all games, b) no studies dedicated to male light companionship, c) no definition of what mainstream media is, d) no normative guidelines that could be used to determine when something is "lag behind", etc. Just boring clickbaite.
