To better understand the value of this critical resource, BCI is taking you on a four-part journey back in time to travel the salt road. In the third part of our journey, we travel back to the Early Modern Period, from the 15th to the 18th centuries, when salt was a crucial factor in the significant developments of trade routes and cultural impacts. We can't imagine our lives without cotton, sugar, palm oil or soy - despite the destructive consequences for people and nature. Its mechanisms can be traced many centuries ago and are crucially part of the history of global capitalism.
