Repetition is a Leader's Superpower

Repetition is a Leader's Superpower

I’m a sucker for great quotes, especially when they have something to do with leadership strategy, or growth mindset. So when I saw this one from Jennifer Tejada, Chairperson & CEO of PagerDuty, it was an instant share.

The first sentence alone is worth its weight in gold.

“As a CEO, expect your convictions to be constantly tested, repetition if your friend.”

Although the actual quote mentions ‘CEO’, my immediate reaction was that this advice is 100% applicable to any executive, leader, or manager. It’s good advice for anyone, really.

When you need an important message to resonate, to stick with people, repetition is your superpower. Seriously, repetition is your superpower. (see what I did there)...

A friend and mentor once told me that if you want people to remember something, you need to repeat it so many times, that if you were to say it just once more, you’d likely puke. Just when you get tired of repeating yourself, you can expect that people will almost get it! But once you get to a place where the people around you smirk, or roll their eyes, because they know what you’re about to say, then you’ve reached your destination. However, keep repeating it anyway if it’s still important.

Repetition is your superpower.

This is all incredibly relevant when it comes to executing a strategy. If you know where you want to go, and you know the big moves that will help you get there, take every chance you get to mention and keep reminding yourself and your people of those big moves. Be concise, be repetitive.

This might seem like a simple idea, but I can speak from experience that it’s very common and easy to not do it effectively. We all get distracted by shiny new objects or projects and lose sight of that repetition that is so important.

Repetition is a leader's superpower.
