Vischering Castle is one of the best-known excursion destinations in the Münsterland region. The award-winning museum, which is well worth a visit, provides an insight into the way of life in times gone by and sheds light on the importance of castles and fortresses in the Münsterland region. Sophisticated techniques, lively films and creative displays make for an outstanding experience on your tour of the museum. Find history you can touch, open hidden doors and immerse yourself in the aristocratic culture of the Münsterland. There is also plenty to discover outside: a walk along the moat opens up new perspectives on the castle thanks to special features.
Cyclists can find their way to the castle on the 100 Castles Route. Together with Nordkirchen Castle and Westerwinkel Castle near Ascheberg, Vischering Castle forms an impressive triangle of castles.
It was thanks to a feud that the Prince-Bishop of Münster decided to have a castle built near Lüdinghausen in the summer of 1271. A stroke of luck for today's visitors. Hardly any other castle offers such beautiful and varied motifs and atmospheres.
A fortified defence system with residential and farm buildings was built on a foundation of piles on separate islands in the middle of an extensive moat system. The defiant round castle with drawbridge, embrasures and battlements formed the last bastion of defence of Vischering Castle. Its marvellous location makes Vischering Castle one of the most beautiful photo motifs in the Münsterland region.
The Droste zu Vischering received the castle as a fief from the Bishop of Münster. The castle became the ancestral seat of the Droste zu Vischering family. The castle served purely as a defensive structure until 1521. In the same year, it burnt down and was rebuilt on the old foundations.
It was rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Although the fortified character of the castle was retained, the decoration of the rooms and the addition of a magnificent hall reflected the need for a higher quality of life. Since this time, Vischering Castle has remained almost unchanged and gives an impression of life in the late Middle Ages and early modern times like no other Westphalian moated castle.
Find out more about this magnificent building from Dominik Olbrisch, cultural officer for the district of Coesfeld: from the history of its construction to its current history of use, you will get to know our "portal" to the castles and palaces in the Münsterland region from a new perspective.

At first glance, the German artist duo Isa Dahl & Daniel Wagenblast work could not be more different at first glance. Isa Dahl's (1965) works captivate with their colourful and undulating pictorial spaces, in which they express the gestural verve she expresses the sensuality of painting itself and at the same time opens up spaces of thought. Daniel Wagenblast's (1963) sculptures are linked to figuration and can be found in public spaces. and can be found in public spaces. They turn the relationship between man and object upside down. Critically and with confrontational humour he scrutinises our dependence on material things in the world and and makes us look for new perspectives and opportunities for change. and possibilities for change.
In a fascinating way, the exhibition places different approaches and approaches and techniques in an artistic dialogue.
From the "Dialogues 2024" series.

In the "Art in the Town Hall" series, artists from the region are given the opportunity to exhibit works of art from the fields of painting, graphics, photography or object art in the Town Hall, thus positioning themselves as part of the Lüdinghausen cultural scene and selling their art.
Long, high corridors and therefore large wall surfaces on the ground floor and first floor of the old town hall building provide an attractive exhibition space for presenting exhibits. To mark the opening of the exhibition, the town of Lüdinghausen organises a vernissage in the foyer of the town hall together with the artist.
The duration of the exhibition is approximately three months. The exhibitions can be viewed at the following times: Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 12.00pm, Monday to Wednesday from 2.00pm to 4.00pm and Thursday from 1.00pm to 6.00pm.
