The Second World War cast its long shadow over the 1940s and the shortage of materials changed a lot of elements of whisky production. Most importantly for Macallan, the shortage of oak sherry casks led the distillery to refill their existing casks more often than they would today. They also decided to switch back to using peat to dry their barley. Both these changes meant that the Macallan of the 1940’s was less spicy and more peaty than modern day Macallan. In an effort to recreate that style, Macallan’s Master Distiller has sampled those 1940’s Macallans and selected recent distillations that echo that 1940’s character. Macallan Forties has a peaty quality on the nose mixed with herbaceous and caramel notes. The palate has a faint hint of sherry along with almond and white chocolate. The finish is apple, cinnamon and a little peat.
