Villa Bodenlos, Italy

Villa Bodenlos is a crumbling and decaying Italian house. This location is a fantastic example of beautiful natural decay of a building. We visited this location in the summer of 2018, as we travelled across northern Italy.

Verdant farmland surrounds the villa (a feature typical of many lost places in Italy). Trees shroud the main house. One must push through the overgrowth in search on the entrance.

Beautiful frescos decorate the walls and ceilings, sun-faded and cracking. Villa Bodenlos is still beautiful despite the ravages of time. The upper floors are of the house collapsing. Trees and shrubs grow up from the ground floor, reaching upwards towards the light.

Scare history of Villa Bodenlos

It is said that the villa was once owned by a renowned architect, who hailed from Venice. This affluent Italian also owned the nearby spinning mill. Sometime in the 1980s, the spinning mill closed. As a result of this the architect decided it was time to move on. He graciously donated the land, as well as the mill and Villa Bodenlos to the local people.

Over the years, there have been some attempts to save the villa from deterioration. A new roof was constructed. The villa was also put up for sale at this time. Sadly, no buyer was found. Subsequently, the villa was left forgotten. The surrounding trees and vegetation slowly engulfed it. Nowadays Villa Bodenlos is barely visible from the road.

    • Thank you Carla. I agree, this type of natural decay is the most beautiful. Free of vandalism, just quietly dissolving and forgotten.

  1. Some terrific pictures of this derelict house. I would venture to say you might be taking quite a chance of serious injury traipsing around through this rubble and failing beams.

    • Thanks, Roger :). This one actually wasn’t too bad, despite the appearance in the photos. Through the door in image 5 and along a corridor, then up the stairs and then I was at the collapsed room. Thankfully not to deathy 😀
