RETURN ENGAGEMENT: Distinguished American conductor
Walter Hendl returned to Gibbs Street to lead the Eastman Philharmonia
in its closing concert of the season last spring. Hendl (shown here in
rehearsal) was guest conductor for the student orchestra’s performance
of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in Eastman Theatre. As
director of the Eastman School from 1964 to 1972, Hendl is credited with
encouraging innovative programs for curricula in accompanying, conducting,
jazz studies and contemporary media, and electronic music, as well as
the establishment of the new music ensemble Musica Nova.
