Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts and have several key properties. They are highly specific and catalyze only certain reactions. Enzymes are classified based on their chemical nature and site of action. Based on chemical nature, there are six main enzyme classes including hydrolases, transferases, oxidoreductases, lyases, isomerases, and synthetases. Based on site of action, enzymes are endoenzymes which act inside cells or exoenzymes which act outside cells. Enzymes can be identified using techniques like morphology, mass spectrometry, and 2D gel electrophoresis.
