WORZEL Gummidge viewers have been left terrified by the BBC's new version of the children's telly classic - comparing the scarecrow to horror villain Freddie Krueger.

Fans insisted the new version of the countryside character, played by Mackenzie Crook, was far more alarming than in Jon Pertwee's version of the show, which ran for four series until 1981.

While it was widely hailed as a brilliant piece of TV, some said it left them shaken with one viewer tweeting: "Looks more like Freddy Kruger. They’ll be some nightmares tonight."

Another said: "The montage of the scarecrows coming to life and staggering across the fields is hands down the scariest thing I’ve seen on TV this year."

A third said it had frightened the kids, saying: "My two children were scared of the scare crow and asked me to turn it off."

A fourth referenced the Nightmare On Elm Street baddie again, tweeting: "Worzel Gummidge looks like Freddy Kruger 🙈🙈."

The Office and Pirates of the Caribbean star Mackenzie is joined by Michael Palin, My Family actress Zoe Wanamaker and Benidorm's Steve Pemberton in the two-part reboot.

Vicki Pepperdine also stars as Aunt Sally, the role made famous by Una Stubbs.

The first of two specials, The Scarecrow of Scatterbrook, aired on BBC One tonight, with The Green Man to follow on December 27 at 7pm.

Mackenzie, 48, was widely praised for his acting tonight, with one fan tweeting: I absolutely adored Mackenzie Crook's Worzel Gummidge. Top of the bunch of the progammes on this Christmas. One more to go but let's have a longer series please."
