Sipping Rum

The 20 Best Rums That Make the Case for Sipping

Pina coladas are great, but these rums are so good they deserve to be enjoyed on their own.

By

If the first thing that leaps to mind when your think of rum is a pina colada, it's time to give this versatile spirit another look. Though the unaged white version of the sugar cane-based spirit is a staple of classic cocktails from the daiquiri to the mojito, the darker, aged version brings a complexity and richness that is prime to compete with your favorite bottles of whiskey, brandy, and cognac. Yes, we're talking about drinking rum straight. If you haven't been exploring the world of sipping rums in recent years, you've been missing out, as the spirit has been having a renaissance, with unique bottles thoughtfully crafted from molasses and herbaceous rhum agricole stunners increasingly available at your local bottle shop and online.

According to the Distilled Spirits Council, rum accounted for $2.5 billion in sales in 2021 (the most recent year for which they have published data), with the super premium rum category growing almost 13% year over year. "[Rum is] going to be the next big spirit, following along the train of whiskey," says Kenneth McCoy of the Rum House in Manhattan.

So grab a few bottles from these rum brands, and see for yourself why rum is poised to become the next liquor to appeal to sippers worldwide.

$46 at Reserve Bar

Ten to One's backstory might sound more like a tech startup than your average rum brand, but don't let that fool you, it's got plenty of authentic cred. Sure, founder Marc Farrell got into MIT at 16, then went to Cambridge and Harvard and became Starbucks's youngest VP, but he was born and raised in Trinidad, and it was his passion for revamping rum's "spring break" reputation that led to the brand's creation.
