Gillibrand pushes for $575M in federal funding for public broadcasting
NEW YORK (WBNG) -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is leading a bipartisan push for funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to be included in the upcoming spending package. Specifically, the senator is calling for $575 million in federal funding.
Gillibrand said the funding bill proposed by the House eliminates advance funding for CPB, which provides direct grant support to PBS and NPR.
CPB also supports more than 1,500 local public television and radio stations.
“For the 21st year in a row, Americans have ranked PBS and its member stations as the most trusted media institutions in the country and many parents ranked PBS’s childhood education content as the most trusted resource preparing children for school,” Gillibrand said.
The Practice of Advance Appropriations for CPB was first proposed by President Gerald Ford and enacted by Congress in 1976.
