The new marina at the Mittelmole in Warnemünde: 246 spaces in the immediate vicinity of the beach and city centre
246 berths for sailing and sports boats, slipways, sanitary facilities and a harbour master's house: the new sports boat harbour in Warnemünde was officially opened last week. It has been in operation since April

The new marina at the Mittelmole in Warnemünde was officially opened last Friday. Construction has been underway since 2017 and the plans are based on a feasibility study from 2013. "The complicated subsoil conditions, the discovery of a wreck and the remains of old harbour facilities repeatedly posed major challenges for everyone involved in the construction," according to a statement from the city of Rostock. Despite the ongoing construction work, it was possible to keep the harbour running and also make major events such as the Warnemünde Week and the Hanse Sail possible.

Sailors and pleasure boaters have been able to use the new harbour since April, with a total of 246 berths for guests and permanent residents available on 14 floating jetties. There are also two slipways, a sanitary building, a harbour master's house and much more. A Wi-Fi network is also set to follow in the autumn, as reported by the "Rostock heute" website.

"The new port is a feast for the eyes, now also meets the high standards of Olympic competitions and will certainly be one of the most popular photo motifs in Warnemünde!" said Dr Chris von Wrycz Rekowski, Senator for Finance, Digitisation and Order, whose Senate department also includes the Port and Maritime Authority. The first considerations for a new harbour were in connection with possible Olympic applications. But even if nothing came of it, the new facility will fulfil the requirements for competitive athletes. "Maybe we'll get the chance to try again in the next few years," hopes Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer, according to "Rostock heute". "We have already created the infrastructure."

New north pier in Warnemünde protects the harbour from waves

The construction of the new harbour cost a total of 15.5 million euros, most of which came from the pot for "Improving the regional economic structure" of the State Ministry of Economics. The project was realised in five construction phases. Following the dismantling of the existing platform, the jetties in the Alter Strom were first rebuilt, as the city of Rostock describes. The old northern pier then gave way to a new building, which now encloses the harbour. This was followed by a new platform for the harbour master's house, new floating jetties, another jetty and the slipway. The harbour master's house was built after the media development and paving of the harbour forecourt.

The new north breakwater is intended to shield the harbour from swell. Previously, the east breakwater reflected the waves in certain wind directions and caused choppy water. Now sailing and sports boats can moor calmly in almost all conditions, writes "Rostock heute".
