Description
During the heavy defensive fighting in Hinterpommern in February and March 1945, thousands of German soldiers were scattered and tried to make their way to one of the Oder bridgeheads. This publication contains, among other things, previously unpublished accounts of the experiences of retreating fighters, most of whom hid in small groups in the woods during the day for up to eleven weeks, marched west at night and tried everything to get across the Oder. Only a few succeeded. The majority were caught by the Soviets or Polish militia and often experienced hell on earth on the march into captivity and in Polish camps.
