In this video from Steve Magnante you’ll hear some of the history and cool facts that follow Chevrolet’s IROC-Z Camaro. It was the ultimate 3rd Gen Camaro performance model, and while I get that the mid-1980s were nothing earth shattering with regards to horsepower, these cars were still something special and molded jillions of young enthusiasts into the racers, hot rodders, and performance car buyers they are today. My dad drove one as his Demo car for his dealership job at Don Murtos Chevrolet in Morgan Hill, and his wasn’t even a 350 and I loved it. Dad being a stick car guy, went for the 305 with a T-5 5-speed and since the statute of limitations is up, I can tell you that we had lots of fun in that car with many a smoky burnout. Was it as cool as his ’68 Z28? Nope, but it was still cool and I’d take a 3rd Gen like it in a heartbeat.

We’re going to let Magnante fill you in on the ins and outs and why’s of the IROC-Z in this cool video below, but know that the heritage of the International Race of Champions, the all-star driver’s racing series, was real and fit these cars so well. And when they became the bodystyle for all IROC races, you couldn’t help but fall in love with them because they were awesome.
