RM2A2M8B6–Chaetopterus pergamentaceus, Print, Chaetopterus or the parchment worm or parchment tube worm is a genus of marine polychaete worm that lives in a tube it constructs in sediments or attaches to a rocky or coral reef substrate. The common name arises from the parchment-like appearance of the tubes that house these worms. Parchment tube worms are filter feeders and spend their adult lives in their tubes, unless the tube is damaged or destroyed. They are planktonic in their juvenile forms, as is typical for polychaete annelids. Species include the recently discovered deep water Chaetopterus

RFPJXN0T–Worms in the soil are not generally considered as particularly lovely. But underwater they can have a delicate and feathery beauty, as is illustrated by this polychaete tube worm (Sebellastarte indica: diameter 8 cms.). A filter feeder, its many tentacles were deployed fully to catch passing organic particles. Photographing them close-up can be a difficult task, as they withdraw their tentacular crowns instantaneously into their tubes at the slightest detection of one's presence. A very stealthy approach was required for this picture, which was taken 20 cms. from the animal. Bali, Indonesia.

RFRF8C04–This is a pair of polychaete tubeworms (Sabellastarte indica: diameter 7 cms.). If they detect that one is approaching, they retract their tentacles very swiftly into their tubes. In these circumstances, it was necessary to adopt a stealthy approach in order to take the picture, about 20 cms. from the two animals. While worms on land are not considered to be beautiful, underwater they can be delicate, feathery and lovely. Individuals of this species are filter feeders, deploying their many tentacles to catch organic particles passing in the current. Photographed near Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia.
