Herve's Chilperic was a medieval burlesque, as can be seen from the crowd of people in medieval dress, with rather modern-looking umbrellas. It was based on the story of the Merovingian King Chilperic I (ruled 561-584). After launching in Paris in 1868, the operetta was put on at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1870.

Herve's Chilperic was a medieval burlesque, based on the story of the Merovingian King Chilperic I (ruled 561-584). After launching in Paris in 1868, the operetta was put on at the Lyceum Theatre in London in 1870. The heroic-looking king is depicted on horseback, led by two ladies in short skirts. There are various other figures, including a man with a bad cold, a butterfly collector and two druids.
